I am having a day where I have to consciously suppress my feelings of superiority and arrogance. I listen to my coworkers drone on about inane little things in their inane little lives. I over hear one young fool bragging about how he spreads pepper in his car to throw off the drug-sniffing dogs from finding his stash. Women talking about how they know so much more than their doctors about the difference in medical conditions. Oh and did you watch the soap opera and I think this character is an evil bitch. I look at them and listen to them and hear no poetry in their soul and I feel like why am I here? I am than this.

But that is not right. No one is really better than anyone else. It is our conceit that keeps us from understanding the people around us. We decide we are better than those around us to sort of give us power over them, to make ourselves feel better about ourselves. This is a trap though and should be avoided.

Still some days it is harder than others. Today has been a harder day. Maybe it is harder to be as accepting when you are operating on less sleep than normal.

Ah, well, I can testify there's very little poetry amongst scientists and engineers. I don't think one gets poetry of soul in day-to-day living except among..poets. And I bet they're ansty emo-types who would drive one FREAKIN' NUTS!

What one needs is to find people 'seriously' joyous about what they do for a living. Who are these rare individuals? I dunno.

Yarha, Does All Poetry Degenerate to the Grind?

dear, that is why "they" are called "mundanes" and we are called... um... "freaks" ;) (some would say Homo-superior, but hey, I'm just not *that* arrogant myself!) lol

Nah, that's because you want a derogatory name for those that aren't in your group. Poetry of soul? I know what technoir is saying, but poetry of soul is precisely what drives great scientists and engineers.

Peppers?
I think that if I were a police officer, and my dog discovered a car full of peppers, I'd suspect that the driver was hiding something and do a more hands-on search. At least start by removing the peppers.

Never underestimate the power of yourself to know what's going on with you, better than any doctor. Doctor's don't have the advantage of living as you for however-many years as a baseline comparison. :-p

Heh, I was going to take issue with that part of it too, but smiths_hammer said it better. :)

Eh, people really do vary in worth. If they didn't, you'd hang out with everyone. Worth, value, who is 'better'... all by definition are subjective terms, so people can't be equal. Let's put it this way, given a forced choice (yes, it's an impractical hypothetical, but most of them are), you'd save someone you love before you'd save someone you hate.

However, this is missing the point, which is that people engage in idle chit-chat in large part to reinforce the social bonds, and you're feeling anti-social and therefore annoyed by the useless banter. The annoyance comes into your consciousness as a feeling of superiority because the people are engaged in such mundane activities that you aren't *currently* enjoying. My opinion; it's only value is in understanding yourself arguably a little better.
