Writer's Block: Open Arms

Have you ever spontaneously hugged someone you didn't know? Or received an unexpected embrace from a stranger?

I spent a lot of my teenage years on the scifi convention circuit. One of the things I loved about living on the con scene was it never felt like strangers. We were all family even if we never met one another before.

Walking up and giving people hugs happens all the time. Sometimes it is friends and sometimes it is a complete stranger. I kind of miss that.

A lot of my random hugs I've received when not performing in costume has been at sci-fi conventions. You're correct in that they really do have a family feeling to them. I really wish I could get out to more. They're always a blast.

This is one of the reasons I think I will always love Cons and LARPing... It just feels like you know everyone even though they're complete strangers...
I didn't actually know anyone at SI for at least a year after I started playing, but I trusted (and still do trust) all of them completely.
