crowd sourcing the technical support.

So i will also pop this question here. I am in the process of figuring out what to do about the dead computer. This lead to a question. If I get a vista box and slap my old primary hard drive in it with xp on it, will this cause problems? Will I be able to retrieve my old data? I have not tried it before and my literature I have around the apartment doesn't say. I think it will be okay and have had at least one person say it should be fine, but I would like some more opinions on the matter.

I would like to get my old data off there due to it having among other things, my music library, half of everything I have ever written, a number of games I bought through steam and other places, and various other bits of ephemera.

Shouldn't be a problem. Vista can read XP files just fine, straight off of another hard-drive. I would suggest tearing those files off and putting them on DVD (Especially the writing) as soon as you get a chance.

Indeed. Backup will be a priority. It takes something like this happening to remind you of something you already know.
