crowd sourcing the technical support.

So i will also pop this question here. I am in the process of figuring out what to do about the dead computer. This lead to a question. If I get a vista box and slap my old primary hard drive in it with xp on it, will this cause problems? Will I be able to retrieve my old data? I have not tried it before and my literature I have around the apartment doesn't say. I think it will be okay and have had at least one person say it should be fine, but I would like some more opinions on the matter.

I would like to get my old data off there due to it having among other things, my music library, half of everything I have ever written, a number of games I bought through steam and other places, and various other bits of ephemera.

Well, with Steam, you should be able to re-download the games you've bought. You really shouldn't have a problem getting the data off for the other stuff though. You could borrow an external drive case, slap your old drive in, and pull it all down via USB, though maybe that's a bit...much.
